Following Your Gut Check: Listening to Your Inner Wisdom
At The Porch Swing KC, I believe healing starts with slowing down enough to hear yourself think — and feel. That’s where the gut check comes in.
Your gut check is that quiet knowing, the flutter that says “yes” before your brain can explain why — or the heaviness that whispers “not this.”
It’s your inner compass, always trying to guide you back to yourself.
What Is a Gut Check?
Your body often knows the truth before your mind can catch up.
You might feel:
- a tight chest when something’s off,
- a warmth when something feels right,
- or a subtle energy shift when you’re about to make a meaningful choice.
Try this mini exercise:
- Take a deep breath.
- Think about a decision you’ve been overanalyzing.
- Without judgment, notice what happens in your body — Does it open or close? Relax or tense?
That’s your gut speaking.
Why We Ignore It
We’re taught to “be reasonable,” to justify every choice with logic. But intuition doesn’t speak in spreadsheets — it speaks in sensations.
When you override it, you may end up:
- saying yes when you mean no,
- staying in situations that drain you,
- or feeling disconnected from your true needs.
Reflect:
When was the last time you listened to your gut — or ignored it?
What happened?
Practicing the Pause
Tuning into your gut doesn’t mean acting impulsively — it means creating space for truth to surface.
The 3-Step Gut Check Pause
- Stop — take one slow, mindful breath.
- Scan — notice sensations (tight, open, heavy, light).
- Name it — “I feel tense when I think about this,” or “I feel calm picturing that choice.”
The more you practice, the more fluent you become in your body’s language.
Trusting Yourself Again
Listening to your gut is a form of self-trust — a return to the wisdom that’s always been there.
At The Porch Swing KC, I help you reconnect with that voice and learn how to honor it with compassion and clarity.
Your turn:
- What does your gut check feel like?
- How do you know when it’s speaking up?
