Finding Hope in September
Finding Hope in September: Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
At The Porch Swing KC, we believe in creating space for conversations that matter. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to honor those we’ve lost, support those who are struggling, and spread hope that healing is possible.
Why This Month Matters
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, yet it’s often surrounded by silence and stigma. This month reminds us that talking openly about mental health can save lives. Every conversation, every check-in, every moment of listening can make a difference.
Signs Someone May Be Struggling
While every person’s story is unique, some common signs that someone may need support include:
Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they once enjoyed
Talking about feeling hopeless, trapped, or like a burden
Major changes in sleep, appetite, or mood
Increased use of alcohol or substances
Expressing thoughts of death or suicide
If you notice these signs, it’s okay to ask, “How are you really doing?”—and to listen with compassion.
What You Can Do
Reach out. Sometimes just showing up for someone can be a lifeline.
Share resources. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 for anyone in emotional distress.
Encourage support. Therapy, community, and connection are powerful tools for healing.
